After she was done with her bath, she dressed for dinner in a simple dress and sandals. She realized that she had a little more time than she'd thought, and she wanted some air, so she grabbed a light sweater and told Siri she was going for a walk. She was trying to wake up and clear her head before seeing Henry again. Her thoughts were bouncing around too much for her to sit still.

Inevitably, she found herself standing under the tree at the top of the hill, the very site of her public violation a few weeks before. The sun had just set over the ocean. This had become her spot, her place to contemplate things she didn’t really want to think about. She stood there for a long moment, looking toward the Wall, its powerful lights making the night's sky glow.

She still wasn't sure how she was doing in this new life. She had to admit that she usually enjoyed Henry in the moment, but then he would do or say something that reminded her of truths she wasn't ready to face. Sometimes he pushed her so hard. Her mind kept returning to Billy's words about Citizens and resources, turning them over and over, worrying at them.

She felt like Billy thought she should hate Henry as much as he did, but she couldn't manage to quite do it. Somehow, when Henry tied her up, she felt freer than she had ever felt. Sometimes she even felt powerful, which she certainly never had felt back in the Plex. And yet the fact that there wasn't any love involved caused her real pain . . . She heaved a confused sigh.

Not that there’s any way out for me anyhow. Not any way that doesn’t involve suicide.

Not finding any answers, and taking note of the time, she began to walk quickly back toward the mansion. She was about halfway across the garden when something leapt out of the bushes and knocked her to the ground.

She opened her mouth to scream, but the man stuffed a rag into her mouth, holding it there with one hand as he held a knife to her throat with the other.

Her eyes widened with terror as she realized that he was a Tribal. He was dressed in a weird amalgam of castoff clothes and animal skins. He straddled her, and she saw no way to escape. His knife nicked her throat. She could feel a trickle of blood run down her neck. Tears began to run down her terrified face.

He pulled the knife away and cut through her sweater and dress at the shoulder, yanking them down hard to reveal her bare skin. The shock of it gave her the courage to fight back, knife be damned. She punched him in the face as hard as she could and tried to roll to the side, but he grabbed both her wrists and forced her onto her back once again.

She didn't even feel the pain in her hand where she'd broken it against his jaw.
